History Of Ybor City Cigars

Ybor City, located north of Tampa, Florida. Cigar manufacturing was the original business. This was later brought over by large numbers of Cuban immigrants. It is Tampa's oldest district. It was home to a large Hispanic diaspora and is known for its cigar factories, which produce some of the finest cigars in the world.

The district has become a popular tourist destination and many museums are dedicated to its history. One of these museums is a cigar museum that traces the entire history of making some of the best cigars in Florida, if not the entire United States.

The Latin roots of Ybor City's cultural diversity were largely rooted in its early years of development.  It was a heavily Latinized area that influenced the cuisine and architecture. Columbia Restaurant, located in the heart of Ybor is one example. It is over 100 years old and the oldest Spanish-language restaurant in America. Its architecture of brick buildings, lampposts and brick streets gives the impression of being transported back in time to the 1920s.

Monopoly of money was the mainstay of organized crime. The most well-known was "Bolita", which in Spanish means "little ball". Due to widespread corruption was rampant during the early days of Ybor. The majority of political corruption was eliminated by federal intervention in 1950.

Ybor City cigars were the catalyst for the initial rise of the area. They also led to large economic gains in the surrounding areas. From 1900 to 1929, cigar production reached the hundreds of millions every year during peak times.
